Portsmouth Halloween Trivia

For decades Portsmouth has done Trick-or-Treat a day before most communities. This is due to the little-known fact that the Managing Editor of the Portsmouth Herald at that time made a mistake. At one point the newsrooms of WHEB and The Portsmouth Herald were very competitive. The Managing Editor of the Herald mistakenly pronounced  the date of Trick-or-Treat to be October 30^th. Not be outdone, the manager of WHEB’s newsroom pronounced the date to be October 31^st.  Kids being very immediate, wanted to get the goods as soon as possible. They all turned on the 30^th.  And so it remains.
