For decades Portsmouth has done Trick-or-Treat a day before most communities. This is due to the little-known fact that the Managing Editor of the Portsmouth Herald at that time made a mistake. At one point the newsrooms of WHEB and The Portsmouth Herald were very competitive. The Managing Editor of the Herald mistakenly pronounced the date of Trick-or-Treat to be October 30th. Not be outdone, the manager of WHEB’s newsroom pronounced the date to be October 31st. Kids being very immediate, wanted to get the goods as soon as possible. They all turned on the 30th. And so it remains.
