By Emily Butler
Riding a bike is one of the earliest forms of freedom. The first time we get to take our two-wheeled chassis out for a ride through the neighborhood is an understated rite of passage.
For numerous adults that rite continues. In a letter penned to his nephew, Albert Einstein gave sage advice, “Life is like riding a bicycle – in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
Movement, indeed, is a form of catharsis. For cyclists who see the world through the veins of roadmaps, traveling long distances is a way to unwind and disconnect from the world.
As American poet, Diane Ackerman, eloquently wrote, “When I go biking, I am mentally far, far away from civilization. The world is breaking someone else’s heart.”
Beautiful Rides
New Hampshire boasts some of the loveliest biking routes and trails in New England. Venturing outdoors offers a cornucopia of waterfalls, wildlife, verdant landscapes, blooming flowers and sky artistry that shifts throughout the seasons.
Some great trails for beginners include the Great Island Common Loop, offering spectacular views of the ocean; Rye to Odiorne Point, providing picturesque vistas; Portsmouth to New Castle Loop, offering a charming island town and Stratham Hill Park Trail provides opportunities for mountain biking.
For long-distance riding, try the Rockingham Recreational Rail Trail that is 28 miles long and has historical architectural sites and rest stops for food.
GPS generated routes are available at Where to Ride and offer different trips around town, including a Portsmouth Public Art Slow Roll, where you can see around ten art exhibitions.
Another stunning pick is the Bear Brook Trail Network, with selections from beginner to advanced, featuring flowing singletracks, technical obstacles and downhill descents. The Granite State truly caters to every biking enthusiast’s desires.
Getting Started
Those new to cycling only need a well-fitted helmet and a bike suitable for their physical specifications. Look for local bike swaps in the area to get a quality bike at a reduced price or check out Papa Wheelies, a local bike store, where their friendly staff can help outfit you with the best bike.
Other needed gear includes padded cycling shorts, water bottle, GPS, floor pump, repair tools, bike lock, headlight and reflective stickers. Since cycling is a low impact sport, the associated risks are minimal.
However, to be safe, update yourself on traffic laws for cycling. An excellent primer on how to navigate the throughfares can be found here: Traffic Laws for Cycling
Benefits and Nutrition
Engaging in cycling not only provides physical exercise but also aids in stress reduction, a crucial facet of maintaining mindfulness in today’s fast-paced world.
During cycling the brain releases neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, fostering an endorphin-induced elevation in mood and productivity. Moreover, the muscle groups worked during cycling help joint stability and better posture.
Eating the right kinds of foods can also help create a feedback loop between fueling your body and generating its output. Whole foods, including complex carbohydrates, nutrient dense foods like microgreens and holistically raised proteins, can form the building blocks to a successful cycling pursuit.
Great Resources
Biking gives a unique perspective on the local landscape, both physically and metaphorically. While it is as simple as riding down a road less traveled to break away from the pressures of urban hood, cycling generates fresh insights that pave the way for personal growth and renewal.
