The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) has introduced a new dynamic part-time shoulder use (PTSU) system to ease congestion on I-95 in Portsmouth. This system allows the right shoulder of the bridge to open as a travel lane during peak times and unplanned incidents from May through October.
Key Details:
- Location: Approximately three miles of I-95, from Exit 5 in New Hampshire to Exit 3 in Maine.
- Operation: NHDOT technicians in Concord will manage the northbound shoulder, while Maine handles the southbound shoulder. Real-time traffic conditions will determine when to open the shoulder.
- Notification: When activated, beacons and lane-use signals will indicate the open shoulder. Flashing beacons at on-ramps will alert drivers to the change.
- Safety: Increased safety patrols will be in place during PTSU operation. The shoulder will close if congestion eases or in case of emergencies. Motorists should only use the shoulder for emergencies and call 911 if needed.
Collaborative Effort:
This PTSU system is a result of the collaboration between the New Hampshire and Maine Departments of Transportation and the Maine Turnpike Authority, which also worked together to rehabilitate the Piscataqua River Bridge.
