Shalimar India: A Taste of Punjab Culture

There’s something about Indian food that hits the spot on a cold day – which has always seemed a bit funny to me, since I think of India as a hot, humid place.

I’m sure this is a misconception, probably based more on Indiana Jones than India. Fortunately, Shalimar India restaurant on Hanover Street offers a range of dishes that attest to the diversity of the Punjabi palate.

Northern India – home to the Punjab culture – has the kind of climate that, in one season, demands warm, nourishing meals and in another, requires light, refreshing fare. A bit like New England, summers there can be hot, and winters can be cold.

At Shalimar India, I found a large menu with selections to suit every season. Once I’d settled in at my table, I ordered a cool Sweet Lassi – a yogurt-based beverage that was smooth and refreshing.

It turned out to be a great complement to my meal, Lamb Roganjosh, which consisted of lamb with oriental spices, chopped tomatoes and a rich, creamy sauce.

The dish came with a warm plate of basmati rice. I also ordered a side of naan.

There were many options for naan. I told the waiter I wanted something with garlic, and the naan he brought had minced garlic that was strong but not overpowering.

The bread was cooked perfectly. Thin breads like naan are easy to overcook, and usually come out too crisp for me, but this one was great.

I skipped dessert, since I still had most of my Sweet Lassi to drink when I’d finished my meal. My only complaint was that the drink was served with a paper straw, which, I believe, was recently established as a crime against humanity.

Sorry. I just can’t get used to the paper straw.

Shalimar India’s menu is substantial. There are entrees featuring beef, chicken or shrimp, but there’s a lot more, including biryanis, tandoor specials, and vegetarian options.

The menu also offers items that are gluten-free, “gluten friendly,” and dairy free. Some meals can also be prepared dairy-free.

Shalimar India is a family-owned business, and claims to be the oldest Indian restaurant in the area, operating since 1992.

My visit to this establishment was well worth going out in the cold. I had enough of my Lamb Roganjosh to save for another meal, and the service was friendly and attentive.

The next time you want something warm, hearty, and perhaps a little different from your usual routine, give Shalimar India a try, if you haven’t already.

Shalimar India is located at 80 Hanover Street. You can check them out online at shalimarindia.com or call 427-2959.
