Earlier this year, the Pulse published two well researched articles that factually demonstrated how Portsmouth (more specifically, Portsmouth taxpayers) bear(s) a grossly disproportionate burden of below market rate housing for the region. See below.
Portsmouth has done enough for affordable housing – Portsmouth Pulse
It turns out Portsmouth is providing a disproportion share of all housing types for the region. Using data from a report titled : “Current Estimates and Trends in New Hampshire’s Housing Supply Updated 2024″, published by the New Hampshire Department of Business and Economic Affairs, over the last four years, Portsmouth has built more than half of the new housing stock despite having less than a quarter of the existing dwelling units in study area towns, namely, Brentwood, Exeter, Greenland, Hampton, Hampton Falls, New Castle Newington, Newmarket, North Hampton, Portsmouth, Rye and Stratham.

So Portsmouth City Council, when will Portsmouth have done enough to address the regional housing deficit? What are your plans to pressure other communities to step up and give Portsmouth taxpayers a break?
