Just when you thought ice cream reviews were done for the year (it is December, after all), my recent visit to Fezziwig’s Food and Fountain prompted me to write another. And who wouldn’t want to, after sampling their “Winter Wonderland” ice cream sundae?
This mountain of vanilla ice cream, topped with marshmallow sauce, marshmallows and candy canes would make old Fezziwig himself proud.
The vanilla ice cream was thick and sweet. Marshmallows and candy cane pieces were swirled into the ice cream itself.
Scrooge’s jolly employer would have more than the sundae to choose from, if he frequented the State Street establishment that bears his name. Fezziwig’s offers a festive selection of cheerfully inspired snacks and drinks.
This reporter didn’t have room to properly explore all the holiday offerings. I did enjoy a cup of eggnog – smooth and creamy, and topped with nutmeg. We’d love to hear what items tempted you and what you tried. Email us, or let us know on Facebook!
I appreciate the effort Fezziwig’s has made to celebrate the season. The “halls” are generously decked, not quite with holly, but with ample Christmas décor. Scrooge’s employer would feel right at home, and I could almost imagine him bursting into dance and bellowing with laughter.
That’s after the nap he’d need, of course, once he’d gulped down the sundae.
The festive fervor need not end with the menu. Fezziwig’s shelves are stocked with delightful items to fill in that space under the Christmas tree.
These include a tea sampler called “The 24 Teas of Christmas” and a marzipan Christmas stollen. Nothing wrong with traditional stollen, but…wait, what’s stollen?
Stollen is a bread with a cake-like consistency, made with dried fruit, candied nuts and covered with powdered sugar. It was originally made without butter or milk, as these were forbidden during advent at the time.
We can now make it with butter and milk…or just buy a marzipan version of almonds and sugar. It might not be the equal of the giant stollen that rolls through the streets of Dresden, Germany, each year, but a marzipan stollen is sure to intrigue your holiday guests.
Dresden’s giant stollen on parade…yes, seriously!
Fezziwig’s also carries a variety of treats, goods and teas to delight your senses at any time of year. They also host afternoon tea (contact the store for reservations).
If you’re looking for something unique with lots of holiday cheer, look no further than Fezziwig’s Food and Fountain at 112 State Street.
